Alexander Gorlizki  Pattern Farming

26 November – 20 December, 2010

The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works on paper by Alexander Gorlizki. Pattern Farming is Gorlizki’s first show at the Baldwin Gallery. Intricate lines of stone-ground pigments and gold leaf, gathering and collecting into complex patterned pastures, Gorlizki’s works are a stunning sensation to the eye. The meticulous mazes of rich, sumptuous colors are crafted after Gorlizki’s “life-long passion” for Moghul miniature paintings and manuscript illustrations that date back to over 600 years ago. The works are contemporary in thought and thus there has been an integration of the archaic into a unique personal visual dialogue, which magically results in a blending of 2 different civilizations, both old and new. Refined, delicate, and fastidiously traditional studies become original and imaginative stages of discourse that are scented with whiffs of surrealism and the contemporary, where the austerity of the punctilious patterns give way to pictorial diversity.

Gorlizki works in a variety of mediums including sculpture, film and drawing. He received his B.A. Hons Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic and his MFA in sculpture from the Slade School in London in 1994. He was awarded the Duveen Travel Award for research in Pakistan, China & Tibet in 1993. In 2000 he received the Certificate of Excellence from the European Design Annual 5. Recent exhibitions include solo shows in Los Angeles, Edinburgh, Cologne, New York, San Francisco and London. Born in London, UK, in 1967, Gorlizki currently lives and works in both New York City and Jaipur, India.
